Our Region

The Shire of Burke is in far North West Queensland on the Gulf of Carpentaria, adjoining the Northern Territory border.  Our two major towns Burketown and Gregory are located on the Savannah Way, one of the world's great transcontinental road journeys for adventure travellers.

Visitors need to come to the Burke Shire Council to experience the natural beauty and diversity the region offers. If you're thinking of passing through, need a place to stay, or want to know about our local attractions contact the Burke Shire Visitor Information Centre on 07 4745 5111.

Weather Information

Burke Shire is in a monsoonal climatic zone characterised by two seasoons - "Wet" and "Dry"

The 'wet' summer months from December to March are hot and humid with average temperatures in the mid-thirties and maximums in the mid-forties. This period is characterised by abundant growth and activity of flora and fauna, including migrating species. Driving in the wet and monsoonal rain can be a hazard with many road closure possible.

The 'dry' winter months from May to October have warm days averaging in the high twenties and low thirties, little rain, and offer cooler evening temperatures and clear night skies.
