Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) In Burke

Burke Shire Council is committed to protecting people and assets. Where necessary, CCTV surveillance is used to assist in meeting this commitment.

Council may only use CCTV for lawful purposes and is bound by the Information Privacy Act 2009 and the Information Privacy Principles in the way it collects and uses footage.

Use of CCTV for lawful purposes

The lawful purposes for which Council may collect CCTV footage include:

  • to monitor and assist in the enforcement of Council’s local laws and other legislation in respect of which Council has jurisdiction:
  • to assist law enforcement agencies such as the Queensland Police Service in obtaining evidence and prosecuting offences;
  • to enhance the safety and security of Council staff, the community generally and Council assets;
  • to identify potential breaches by Council staff of their employment contracts, Council’s local laws or other legislation, and to gather evidence in respect of those breaches.

Locations of CCTV

Council’s Public Space CCTV cameras include:

  • Burketown Wharf (boat ramp and car-park)
  • Burke Shire Nijinda Durlga community building

Council also maintains CCTV cameras at various Council facilities:

  • Works Depots
  • Water & Sewer Treatment Plants
  • Landfill sites
  • Administration Office

Please note that these cameras are rarely monitored in real-time.

Obtaining CCTV footage

Access to council's CCTV systems and cameras is strictly controlled through council's CCTV Policy and the Information Privacy Act 2009. System access is only available to:

  • approved council officers
  • approved contracted service providers
  • The Queensland Police Service
  • Emergency Service Providers (via MOU)

CCTV recordings are stored digitally.

Any person/s requesting access to camera footage can apply to council by completing either

  • Information Privacy (IP) Act Access Application; or
  • Request To Information (RTI) Application.

Privacy

CCTV recordings are only accessed by authorised persons. The information collected may be provided to agencies like the Queensland Police Service for law enforcement purposes. Your personal information will not be given to any other person or agency unless required by law. Any personal information is handled in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2009.
